Own Your Body's Story // Downers Grove Boudoir Photographer

Guest Blog: Kensli D - Brand Ambassador, Copywrite, Med-Spa Manager, Masters Holder & Mom of Two

A little over a week ago I took a Bachelorette trip to Tulum. I was beyond excited to go for a number of reasons but the most notable was that this trip would be my first time leaving the country! As a mom of two, some time away was well deserved and well earned.

The group consisted of 9 women ranging in age from mid 20s to early 30s and there was one other mom in the group. For the most part I consider myself to be a confident person but when it came to 4 days of wearing swimsuits all day, I’ve never felt more insecure and self conscious. To start, I rarely if ever wear a 2 piece suit. When I do, it’s not a bikini and/or I wear a strategic combination of high waist bottoms and a cover up. This is to hide the stretch marks and loose skin on my belly from my previous pregnancies. I know and understand that every body is beautiful but when placed in a setting where you can’t help but to compare yourself to others, it’s challenging to remember that.

Apart from the aforementioned body insecurities I’m also struggling with insecurity about my breasts that have deflated due to breastfeeding and increased pigmentation in various areas of my body like my back, underarms, and bikini line. Now with this combination, I hope you can see why I would prefer to be clothed in order to convey and embody optimal confidence.

When I worked with Sarah on my first true boudoir shoot I was challenged to release these insecurities. The final shots are not of someone who was confident and self secure but of someone who decided to fake it until the confidence appeared. Women who are the most insecure about their bodies are the ones who deserve to showcase them the most. Our bodies tell a story about who we are and what we’ve been through. From stretch marks and loose skin to pigmentation, every piece of the puzzle is necessary to see the full picture and understand their story.

I encourage every woman to take time for themselves and reflect on what makes them feel most confident. If we can embrace what we see as flaws that is amazing. If we instead choose to change our bodies to achieve the look that makes us feel most confident, that is amazing too! Time to take a pause on giving to others and give back to ourselves.
